A Memorial Day Reflection
A Memorial Day Reflection
May 25, 2026
Today, the world feels a little quieter, even amidst the parades and the gatherings. We have reached Memorial Day—the day we set aside to honor the brave souls who gave everything to ensure the freedoms we walk in today.
Freedom as a Living Tribute
When we talk about Vitality, we are talking about the "Life Force" that flows through us. Today, I am thinking about the life force of the men and women in uniform that was surrendered so that ours could flourish.
For those of us living with chronic illness, we know that "freedom" is never something to take for granted. We fight for the freedom to move, the freedom to work, and the freedom to feel well. Seeing that struggle through the lens of Memorial Day adds a layer of deep, somber gratitude. Every breath we take in a land of liberty is a breath that was defended by someone else's courage.
Guided by a Higher Power
In my hardest moments—the days when the pain of Lupus makes me feel like I’m in a battle of my own—I lean on God. And as I look at the history of our service members, I see that same divine reliance. So many went into the unknown with nothing but their faith and their duty to guide them.
Having God by my side reminds me that sacrifice is the highest form of love. Today, we honor that love. We honor the families who have an empty chair at their table today, and we pray for the peace that surpasses all understanding to guard their hearts.
Honoring the Fallen Through Our Living
How do we truly thank those who gave their "last full measure of devotion"? We do it by not wasting the life they protected.
We honor them by living with Purpose.
We honor them by finding Pleasure in the simple liberties of a sunny afternoon.
We honor them by tending to our Sacred Containers so we can be of service to our communities, just as they were.
Today’s Memorial Practice:
The Moment of Gratitude: At 3:00 PM local time, join the National Moment of Remembrance. Stop whatever you are doing for one minute of silence.
The Purple & Gold Connection: If you are wearing your purple for Lupus awareness today, let it also represent the "Purple Heart." Let your resilience be a mirror to the resilience of our heroes.
The Prayer of Protection: Say a prayer for those currently serving and for the veterans who are still with us, carrying the invisible wounds of war.
A Final Thought for the Day
Freedom is a gift, but it is also a responsibility. Today, as you enjoy your time with family or find rest in your home, take a second to look at the sky and simply say, "Thank you."
To the fallen: We see you. We honor you. We will live lives worthy of your sacrifice.
How are you spending this Memorial Day? Is there someone specific you are holding in your heart today? Let’s turn the comments into a wall of remembrance and honor.
